What Is a Sun Room or Winter Garden System?

A sun room or winter garden is more than a pergola. It is a room-like, protected outdoor living space created by combining a fixed aluminium profiles, retractable roof and glass wall systems.

Rather than simply providing shade, these systems create a customizable enclosure. The structure is built on pergola technology and paired with a bioclimatic or glass roof, while the surrounding space is enclosed with glass walls such as fixed panels, sliding or folding doors, and in some cases guillotine windows.

The result is a space that sits between indoors and outdoors. It offers protection from the weather, fills with natural daylight, and maintains a strong visual connection to your garden, terrace, or surrounding view

Built for Comfort, Performance, and Everyday Use

Behind the transparent surfaces and slim profiles, there is careful technical thinking.

For detailed values and drawings, you can direct architects and planners to dedicated roof and glass system pages or technical resources.

Lighting & Comfort Add-Ons

Built-in LED lighting, heaters, fans, and prepared points for speakers or controls.

Thermal Considerations

Choice of glass types (e.g. low-e, laminated, insulated) and seals to support comfort and energy performance.

Ventilation & Fresh Air

Combine roof louvers, sliding or folding glass, and guillotine windows to create natural airflow when you want it.

Condensation Management

Profiles, gaskets, and air circulation are designed to reduce condensation risk, especially in colder seasons.

Structural Design

Aluminium profiles and glass dimensions are selected according to spans, wind conditions, and local climate.

How Sun Rooms & Winter Gardens Can Be Configured

Every project starts with the existing building and how you want to use the space. Impergo systems use the same pergola technology—but here, they work together as a full room system. Typical configurations include.

01

Choose the Size & Layout

Designed as an extension of your home, the space can be attached to the facade or built as a standalone garden room, with layouts planned around seating, circulation, and indoor-outdoor flow.
02

Match Finishes with Your Home Architecture

Select from RAL colors, matte, metallic, or wood-effect finishes to align with windows, doors, façade materials, and overall architectural style.
03

Choose the Roof Type

Choose between bioclimatic louvered roofs, retractable systems, or insulated glass roofs depending on how much daylight, shade, and seasonal control you want.
04

Design the Glass Enclosure System

Define how open or enclosed the space feels with sliding doors, folding glass systems, fixed panels, or guillotine windows for flexible ventilation and protection.
05

Enhance Comfort with Integrated Features

Add lighting, heating, shading systems, and automation to create a comfortable environment that can be used throughout the day and across seasons.

01

Structure & Aluminum Profiles

High-quality aluminum load-bearing frames, posts, and beams create the main structure, with integrated drainage channels to guide water through the profiles. Concealed fixing options help maintain clean lines and a refined appearance.
02

Thermal Roof Systems

Choose from fixed or retractable glass roof systems, including laminated and insulated glass options designed for durability and thermal performance. Each roof system helps regulate daylight, ventilation, and rain protection, while reflective glass options can reduce UV exposure, limit heat gain, and maintain a brighter, more comfortable interior environment.
03

Thermal Glass Wall Systems

Fixed glass panels, sliding glass doors, folding glass systems, and guillotine windows can be configured with insulated or thermal glass options to improve comfort and weather protection while keeping the space bright and open.
04

Shading & Privacy

Zip screens, roof curtains, blinds, frosted glass, and printed glass options help control glare, heat buildup, privacy, and sun exposure. These systems can be integrated into the structure for a cleaner appearance and smoother daily use.

Sun Room and Winter Garden FAQ

It’s a hybrid space. Technically, classification depends on local regulations and how it’s connected to the building. We can support you and your architect with technical data as needed.

Roof louvers, opening glass elements, shading, and optional heating or cooling help manage comfort. In some projects, the room is integrated with the building’s HVAC; in others, it’s treated as a semi-outdoor space.

Good ventilation and correct system design are important. We combine suitable glass, profiles, seals, and ventilation possibilities to help reduce condensation.

Yes. With retractable roofs and sliding/folding/guillotine glass, you can open large parts of the room to feel like an open terrace.

Permits depend on local rules and whether the space is considered an extension. Your municipality or local authority has the final say; we can provide technical drawings and information to support the process.

In many cases, yes—subject to structural capacity and details of the existing construction.
